Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education
Dr. Felipe Barrios Masias of the University of Nevada, Reno, is exploring ways to help farmers in the region reduce water consumption amid the challenges of an arid climate and limited water resources. He is collaborating with the Desert Farming Initiative, an applied agriculture program within the University’s College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources, as well as local Nevada farmers, including Holley Family Farms in Dayton, Nevada. Together, they are testing whether grafting techniques and soil moisture sensors can help maintain high production while reducing water use.
